🚒 Guest Speaker: Fire Chief Jeff Wormington – Protecting Those Who Protect Us

At our recent Rotary meeting, we were honoured to welcome Goderich Fire Chief Jeff Wormington as our guest speaker. Chief Wormington shared a sobering and important message about the occupational cancer risks faced by firefighters due to exposure to smoke, hazardous chemicals, and fire-retardant materials.

📊 Studies show that firefighters have a significantly higher risk of cancer diagnosis and mortality than the general population, with elevated risks for bladder, mesothelioma, colon, prostate, and testicular cancers.

In response, the Goderich Fire Department is taking proactive steps to reduce exposure by updating their personal protective equipment (PPE). One key initiative is the purchase of lightweight, dual-certified non-structural PPE, designed for calls that do not involve interior fire attack—offering protection while minimizing unnecessary exposure.

💙 The Rotary Club is currently considering support for this vital project, recognizing the importance of safeguarding the health of those who serve our community so selflessly.

Let’s stand behind our firefighters as they work to protect not only our homes—but their own health and future.
